The Chief Information and Financial Officer at the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has today been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours.
Nic Granger, who sits on the regulator’s Board, was given the accolade in recognition of her services to digital transformation.
Since joining the government organisation in 2016, Nic has led a team in driving forward the energy transition through digital and data including setting up the National Data Repository (NDR), which now contains more than a petabyte of data. The NDR holds information reported by petroleum licensees and offshore infrastructure owners. It can then be used by carbon storage or offshore wind companies to help assess suitable locations.
On learning of the honour, Nic said: “It never even crossed my mind that something like this was on the cards. I think our successes have been approaching our work with a mindset that we need digital solutions that work for people and businesses and serve a real-life purpose.
“The tech solution is the easy part. It’s bringing people along with you that’s the challenge – and brings the real change. You can put in a new system, but it only works if it works for the people who use it.”
Nic joined the NSTA in 2016, a year after its inception, having previously been Financial Secretary of the Falkland Islands Government. Her role at the NSTA combines her IT degree and background as a chartered accountant with her experience and expertise in the digital sphere.
Stuart Payne, Chief Executive of the NSTA, said: “On behalf of everyone at the NSTA I am delighted for Nic. In addition to her day job, Nic has given significant amounts of her time in support of communities, conservation and her profession. Through her work on numerous boards and committees as well as mentoring and coaching individuals, Nic has consistently worked to make a positive difference.”
Nic sits as Chair of the Offshore Energy Digital Strategy Group, is a board member and Chair of the Risk, Audit and Finance Committee for BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, a non-executive director of CAST, the Centre for Acceleration of Social Technology, and a trustee of the Bat Conservation Trust.
She was included in the 2024 and 2023 CIO100 list, was a finalist for Digital Leader of the Year 2021, and included in the 2025 OpenUK honours list for open data.
