Regulatory framework

The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) was established to regulate the UK oil and gas industry, in conjunction with other regulatory authorities, and has a range of powers to deliver this remit.

Industry Levy 330 170

The NSTA recovers its costs from the oil and gas companies that benefit from its services. An industry levy was introduced in October 2015, following consultation with industry, to fund the NSTA in line with the established principle of ‘user pays.’

Charging regime and fees

The NSTA charges fees for a range of services to specific licence holders, including consents issued under petroleum licences, offshore methane gas and carbon dioxide storage licences and for pipeline works authorisations issued under Part III of the Petroleum Act 1998.

Statutory Notice

The Energy Act 2016 (the ‘Act’) gives the NSTA the power to attend and participate in certain ‘relevant’ external meetings (including videoconferences and teleconferences) between different companies operating in the UK continental shelf.
