This Stewardship Expectation sets out the Authority’s view as to how Industry should manage existing operations and new developments in order to reduce their GHG emissions and support delivery of the UK’s net zero target.

Flaring and venting are controlled processes to dispose of gas, essential for emergency and safety purposes on oil and gas installations, and in situations where it may not be feasible for the gas to be used, exported or re-injected.

The OGA Strategy makes clear that quantification of the societal costs of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is an integral component of expected economic value estimates for activities undertaken in the UKCS.

Ensuring that decommissioning is carried out in a timely and cost-effective manner not only helps value creation from the UKCS, but also demonstrates industry’s commitment to responsibly managing the UK’s petroleum legacy.

The Authority is fully committed to supporting achievement of the UK’s net zero emissions target and is working with government and industry on the vital role that the oil and gas industry must play in the UK energy transition
