Ongoing operations

The Easington terminal has been one of the UK’s main sites for receiving and processing natural gas since 1967.

Centrica Energy Storage operates the Easington onshore gas processing terminal and the Rough gas storage facility in the Southern North Sea. Storage operations were restarted at Rough in 2022 to bolster the UK’s energy security and help reduce consumer bills. It now provides half of the UK’s gas storage, enough to heat 2.4 million homes over winter.

Energy transition

The Humber has the potential to evolve into a leading renewables and low carbon energy hub, revitalising the region's industrial heartlands. Initiatives to decarbonise the Humber are already providing direct and supply chain jobs as well as local skills development.

Equinor, SSE Thermal and Centrica have proposed a network of hydrogen production, storage and usage in the Humber and beyond, connected by underground pipelines.

Collectively, these projects form Humber Hydrogen, which aims to support sustainable energy solutions in the region. The Humber Hydrogen Pipeline is the critical infrastructure which enables the hub, connecting hydrogen production, storage and usage locations in the Humber.

Centrica and Equinor propose a multi-stage green and blue hydrogen production facility at Easington (H2H Easington), with initial projects to be commissioned by the end of the decade and potential expansion throughout the 2030s. These projects could displace current natural gas demand and facilitate the energy transition in the aviation sector.
